Getting married in Gibraltar

Getting married in GibraltarThe wedding season is fast approaching and Gibraltar could very well be the wedding destination of your dreams. Compared with other countries, getting married in Gibraltar is relatively easy – but this doesn’t mean it should be taken any less seriously. A Gibraltar wedding is internationally recognised and so is as important as getting married anywhere in the UK.

But why not follow in the footsteps of John Lennon and Yoko Ono and start your life together on the beautiful island of Gibraltar.

Gibraltar weddings
Happy couples can get married in a variety of places in Gibraltar. As well as the Registry office itself, recent legislation permits the marriage registrar to carry out civil weddings in places such as the Almeda Botanical Gardens, the Mount, the Mons Calpe Suite and four of Gibraltar’s hotels.

Although you technically have to give only 24 hours notice to get married in Gibraltar, it is perhaps not wise to leave things at such short notice for the big day. As with weddings in the UK, and indeed anywhere else in the world, the more time you give yourself to plan for your wedding, the more time you give yourself to help ensure your nuptials go as smoothly as possible.

Legal requirements for getting married in Gibraltar
You do not have to be a resident of Gibraltar to marry on the Rock. You do not have to have resided in Gibraltar for any length of time to have your wedding in Gibraltar, and if you are having a civil ceremony, you only have to give a minimum of one working day’s notice – how wise this is in terms of preparation time though, we’re not sure!

If you are having a civil ceremony, the law states that you can be married at approved locations in Gibraltar, not just the Registry office itself, outside the Registry working hours and at weekends.

To have a Gibraltar wedding, couples wishing to get married in Gibraltar will have to provide various documents to prove their identity. Single persons wishing to marry will have to provide the Registrar with their passport or national identity card, as well as their full birth certificate. Widows and widowers will also have to provide their previous marriage certificate and the death certificate of their spouse. Those who have been married before will also have to provide their previous marriage certificate and proof that the previous marriage is over – either a final and absolute divorce decree or certificate of annulment.

As with most things, the key to having a successful Gibraltar wedding is in the planning. Every wedding is different and every couple will have a different set of circumstances and requirements. Perhaps the best thing to do if you are planning to get married in Gibraltar is to make your own enquiries. By speaking to the relevant parties, you will be able to get the most up-to-date information. A good place to start is the Civil Status & Registration Office, Joshua Hassan House, Secretary’s Lane, Gibraltar, Tel: (+350) 200 72289.

Enjoy your big day!
