Gibraltar Christmas lights to be switched on this Friday
This Friday (18/11/2011) marks the start of the festive season in Gibraltar, when the Christmas Illuminations will be switched on.
The lights will be switched on at 7pm on the Main Street side of the John Mackintosh Square on front of Parliament House.
The honour of switching on the lights has been handed to 11-year-old Kevin Castle who will be lighting up Gibraltar’s main thoroughfare in the run up to Christmas Day and throughout the festive season.
Young Kevin will be accompanied on the night by his family and friends. The people behind the installation of the lights, Gibraltar Electricity Authority and Minister for Enterprise, Joe Holliday, will also be in attendance.
Everyone is being welcome to attend this colourful ceremony which has traditionally become the first event in Gibraltar Christmas calendar.
The evening’s proceedings will begin at 6.30pm, when the choir from Sacred Heart Middle School will be performing a wonderful selection of popular carols.
Following the switching-on ceremony, the illuminations will thereafter come on, automatically, every day until the 6th January 2012, from 5.00pm until 1.00am, and as from 9.30am on Saturdays leading to Christmas Day. As customary they will remain on throughout the nights of Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and the 5th January 2012.
